TM data centres now powered by clean energy

TM secures Green Electricity Tariff (GET) from TNB for its KL, Cyberjaya and Johor Bahru data centres, adding to their Green Building Index (GBI) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certifications Customers of data centre services provided by Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) will now be able to accelerate their sustainability journey, with the Group recently securing Green Electricity Tariff (GET) from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) for three (3) of its data centres.   The data centres comprise the Klang Valley Core Data Centre (KVDC) in Cyberjaya, Iskandar Puteri Core Data Centre (IPDC) in Johor Bahru and KL City Data Centre (CTDC) in Brickfields. This adoption of green energy supply complements the data centres’ Green Building Index (GBI) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certifications obtained previously for their efficient energy use, further cementing TM’s commitment towards reducing carbon emission and impact on the environment. GET is one of the Government’s initiatives to provide Malaysian consumers the option to use green electricity coming from renewable energy supply as the country moves towards achieving net-zero Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by the year 2050. GET subscribers are supplied with electricity coming from solar and hydro generators instead of fossil-fuel based. Imri Mokhtar, Group Chief Executive Officer, TM said, “The largest source of carbon emission worldwide is from electricity generation as well as heat management, and data centres use significant amounts of power to run the IT and Cloud workloads. This indirectly contributes to high level of carbon emission as the electricity typically comes from fossil fuel-based energy supply. With this clean electricity, we will substantially reduce the impact our data centres have on the environment, while continuing to enable our customers, from large enterprises, the public sector or global hyperscalers, to enjoy the convenience, stability and security of our data centre services. “For our data centre customers who are conscious of the green efforts in their business operations, GET fulfills this need, enabling them to deliver their products and services in a greener manner to their end customers. This green initiative by TM will provide a total energy saving of 27 million kWh per year, which is equivalent to a total carbon emission of 19,134 metric tons,” he added. “To put that into perspective, this is comparable to the amount of electricity used at 3,476 homes for a year, or 9.7 million litres of petrol consumed by the average automobile.” The adoption of GET is the latest among the Group’s various initiatives under the Environmental pillar of its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitment. Mindful of its responsibilities towards environment conservation and climate impact, the Group has included sustainability factors in all its operations in addition to running nature preservation activities via its foundation, Yayasan TM. In promoting sustainability, TM remains steadfast in its ESG commitments. For Environmental, the Group will progressively cut down emissions by 30% in 2024, 45% by 2030 and achieve Net-Zero emission by 2050. On Social, TM is set to provide access to high-speed internet to at least 70% of premises nationwide. The Group promotes gender diversity in decision-making roles by having a minimum of 30% women on its Board of Directors and in Management. Under Governance, TM will continue working with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to uphold its zero-tolerance to any form of corruption and maintain the highest standards of corporate governance.

Op Selamat to ensure a safer Raya celebration for all

TM remains committed to work closely with enforcement agencies in ensuring the welfare and well-being of the community Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) and Polis DiRaja Malaysia (PDRM) today launched Op Selamat 18/2022 to promote a safer and joyous celebration this upcoming Hari Raya for all Malaysians nationwide. Entering into its 18th edition, this year's campaign is aptly themed "Rumah Selamat, Selamat Sampai ke Destinasi" (Safe Home, Safe Journey), with the aim of increasing public awareness on road safety and home security during festivities. Op Selamat will be running for 10 days, from 29 April until 8 May 2022. This marks the 23rd collaboration between TM and PDRM on this campaign, the last being in 2019 before the pandemic hit. This is part of the long-standing strategic partnership that TM has established with PDRM, including the MERS999 emergency hotline, the anti-telecommunications cable theft efforts, and the Secured Mobile Services platform used for enforcement operations. The campaign was launched at Menara TM by Datuk Razarudin Husain, the Deputy Inspector General of Police. He also flagged off the 'Traffic Monitoring Team' and a convoy of motorcyclists and cars, symbolically highlighting the campaign's message of road and home safety. Also present at the event were CP Datuk Wira Mat Kasim Karim, Director of Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT); CP Datuk Aidi Ismail, Director of Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPJKK); Tan Sri Mohammed Azlan Hashim, Chairman of TM; Imri Mokhtar, Group Chief Executive Officer of TM; senior management of TM Group, police officers of various ranks as well as officers from various government agencies such as Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia, Angkatan Pertahanan Awam Malaysia, Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (KKM), Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan Malaysia (JPJ) and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO). In his opening speech, Tan Sri Mohammed Azlan said, "TM is committed and always ready to work hand-in-hand with PDRM and other law enforcement agencies in ensuring the security and well-being of the community. This year, once again we continue our long-standing collaboration with PDRM on this noble effort. This campaign reflects our unwavering support towards the Government's initiatives to reduce road mishaps and improve home safety during festive seasons. "The safety of road users and their homes are of utmost importance during festivities. This is the key message we want to spread to the public, and we urge everyone to stay alert on the road and vigilant at home," he added. For this year's campaign, TM is contributing various necessities for the 15 Op Selamat operation centres nationwide, including campaign advocacy and materials such as leaflets and stickers that will be distributed to road users.

TM R&D collaborates with Maldives’ leading digital services provider, Dhiraagu to bring ewar to businesses in Maldives

EWAR, A.I. driven contactless temperature screening solution made in Malaysia has now entered the international market ​Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), through its innovation arm, TM Research & Development (TM R&D), is expanding the delivery of its Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) driven contactless temperature screening solution – Early Warning, Alert & Response or "EWAR" – to Maldives. ​ For the expansion, TM R&D is working alongside Dhiraagu, the leading and largest provider of telecommunications and digital services in Maldives, to assist local businesses in resuming full operations while maintaining a safe environment by installing EWAR at their premises. This initiative is set to provide businesses in Maldives and their stakeholders with the confidence for business continuity through the provisioning of the complete solution. Commenting on the collaboration, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said, "We are excited to collaborate with Dhiraagu to introduce EWAR, a reliable and accurate contactless thermal screening solution to businesses in Maldives. As we are facing an unprecedented period, health procedures to curb the Covid-19 pandemic are universal which is why we believe EWAR serves two main purposes – to provide early warning alerts of high temperature efficiently and to minimise human contacts. We believe other countries can also reap the benefits of EWAR to better face this pandemic. We see this as our first step into showcasing how innovative digital solutions developed by Malaysian talents such as EWAR can assist in the fight against COVID-19 at the global front." "As we are navigating through a new normal, we will continue to introduce smart digital solutions that focus on safety and to help fulfil the digital requirements of businesses. Harnessing their expertise in digital platforms and digital solutions, TM R&D introduced two (2) main products under EWAR, namely EWAR Crowds and EWAR Compact in April. EWAR Crowds is designed to conduct a rapid body temperature screening of approximately 10-15 individuals per second simultaneously at high traffic areas. The solution is non-intrusive and can easily be deployed in locations with mass traffic flow such as offices, shopping complexes, transportation hubs, universities, schools, tourist attractions, airports, immigration centres, and hospitals. EWAR Compact on the other hand is more suitable for one-on-one contactless thermal screening. This helps to eliminate the need for hand-held temperature taking devices which can subsequently minimise long queues and increase efficiency. Both EWAR products also come with cloud-based software and real-time monitoring app which makes this innovative solution unique. If any visitor entering the premises records a higher temperature, an alert will be triggered and a notification will be sent to the mobile device of the designated person in charge. The system also allows storing of individual temperature reports over a cloud system where it can be accessed remotely for tracking or analysis. "As we all are collectively working towards the same goal, health, and safety of our employees, customers, and communities are given the utmost priority. The EWAR solution has been developed with the highest accuracy for thermal screening. We are delighted to be collaborating with TM R&D to bring this complete solution to local businesses towards ensuring business continuity," said Mahmoud Dasser, Chief Marketing Officer of Dhiraagu.  Currently, EWAR has been deployed at more than 150 sites across several industry verticals to provide accurate, hassle-free screening of employees and visitors. The sites include the quarantine and treatment centre for COVID-19 cases at Malaysia Agro Exposition Park (MAEPS) in Serdang, large and mid-size office lobbies, 12 schools, hotels, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) payment counters, various sales galleries, Gamuda Land construction sites, just to name a few. TM R&D has been growing from strength to strength since 2016, winning seven (7) globally recognised awards over the last two (2) years. With more than 2,800 IPRs and 1,400 digital assets generated to-date, TM R&D's innovations, all developed in-house cut across multiple verticals such as Telco, Retail, Logistics, Agriculture, Healthcare and Education with safety and productivity as the top priority.
