KUALA LUMPUR, 15 FEBRUARY 2024: Maybank Islamic Berhad and TM, the nation’s leaders in Islamic banking and telecommunications, have forged a partnership to deliver the country’s first Islamic Banking as a Service (BaaS) solution powered by 5G. Designed for consumers and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), this collaboration combines the best of Maybank Islamic’s diverse financial services and TM’s recognised Uni5G Postpaid Biz mobile packages, creating seamless access and experiences for today’s digital customers.

With local entrepreneurs and MSMEs to gain the most, Maybank Islamic and Unifi Business, TM’s digital business solutions arm, today launched their inaugural ‘Go Niaga’, a mobile business banking bundle to help businesses manage finances, improve incomes and offer digital payment options powered by secure 5G connectivity and networks. The bundle will address current market gaps among this segment, and enable businesses to better participate in e-Commerce and expand their customer reach.

TM inks agreement with DNB to provide fibre connectivity in accelerating rollout of 5G network services nationwide

With a total contract value of RM2 billion over 10 years, the signing of a Fibre Leasing Service agreement with DNB demonstrates TM’s commitment to enable the provision of 5G infrastructure in supporting the Government’s ambitious digital aspiration ​Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) today announces the signing of a Fibre Leasing Service agreement with Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) to speed up the deployment of the Government-owned 5G network nationwide. Taking on a leading role in enabling a Digital Malaysia, and as the national connectivity and digital infrastructure provider, TM is at the forefront of technology and innovation to support the country as it moves forward to realise a more digital society, digital business, digital industry and digital Government by 2030. The term sheet agreement with a total contract value of RM2 billion over 10 years was duly signed by Imri Mokhtar, Group Chief Executive Officer of TM and Amar Huzaimi Md Deris, Executive Vice President, TM Wholesale while DNB was represented by Augustus Ralph Marshall, Chief Executive Officer and Dushyanthan Vaithiyanathan, Chief Operating Officer. Commenting on the signing, Imri said: “Today’s signing further reinforces the Government’s aspiration of putting in place Malaysia’s digital infrastructure and network. We have always been a strong advocate of infrastructure sharing in providing connectivity services and end-to-end solutions, to enable excellent wireless solutions and services.” DNB will be able to leverage on TM’s extensive fibre and network infrastructure, and subscribe to TM’s 5G RAN-to-Edge Fronthaul and Backhaul solution for the provision of fibre connectivity, enabling DNB to provide 5G network services nationwide. Under the agreement, TM will provide DNB with 5G fibre leasing services for connectivity between DNB’s 5G mobile sites and nodes, leveraging on TM’s domestic fibre cable network spanning over 640,000 km across Malaysia. Prior to this, TM along with other fibre providers in Malaysia had participated in the 5G Fiber Leasing Request for Quotation (RFQ) exercise conducted by DNB in June 2021. “As DNB’s selected partner in implementing the Government’s 5G network rollout plan in Malaysia, the signing of this Fibre Agreement is testament to our advanced network technology and workforce capabilities in delivering fibre solutions throughout the country. Critical in executing this mission is to ensure our network is robust to support the future requirements of 5G and further fuel technological innovation in Malaysia,” Imri added. “In delivering the fibre connectivity for DNB’s 5G network, the local telecommunications vendors and suppliers’ ecosystem shall benefit too, in areas such as engineering services, supply of fibre, accessories, poles, manholes and premise equipment. Based on our current fibre implementation, we expect more than 70% of the work to involve and benefit bumiputera and local companies.” “TM is also excited to utilise DNB’s 5G network to provide 5G services and solutions to our home, SME, enterprise and public sector customers. With the launch of DNB 5G network services yesterday, we will be able to test the 5G network and offer services on a trial basis in selected areas across Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya,” Imri concluded. Today’s signing is in tandem with the implementation of Jalinan Digital Negara’s (JENDELA) action plan and cements TM’s commitment of enabling Digital Malaysia through MyDIGITAL. It is also in support of the Government’s other digital plans encompassing digital connectivity (domestic fiberisation, international connectivity), digital infrastructure (cloud, data centre and cybersecurity) and digital talents (via Multimedia University and TM Digital Academy).

TM revises 2018 key headline KPIS – embarks on enhanced performance improvement programme (PIP 2018) and introduces new broadband plans

The Group also announced the implementation of its Performance Improvement Programme 2018 (PIP 2018) – a continuation of its transformation journey, now in its 4th wave. TM also introduced new Broadband plans in its ongoing efforts to provide affordable broadband services to the nation, and in support of national aspirations. Datuk Bazlan Osman, Acting Group Chief Executive Officer, TM commented on the announcement: “We are currently facing numerous challenges to the business namely intensifying competition; increasing business and operating costs; cautious enterprise spending as well as increasing regulatory pressures. Given these headwinds, we are revising our Headline KPIs for 2018 – to an expected revenue growth of negative 1.0% to flat in 2018, Group Operating Profit (Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT)) at approximately RM1.0 billion and Customer Satisfaction Measure of 72.” At the same time, TM is also revising its capex guidance for this year between 20-22% of revenue, from the high 20s % guided earlier this year. This entails reprioritising its network spending and sweating of existing assets. With regard to expanding its coverage, TM will do so in the most efficient manner. “In our ongoing transformation journey and to adapt to the changing landscape, TM has embarked on our 4th wave of Performance Improvement Programme 2018 (PIP 2018) which looks at 4 main pillars of Revenue Uplift, Sustained Profitability, Improved Cash Flow and Increased Productivity. We believe the strategic initiatives laid will assist TM in navigating through the current challenges and position us in a more resilient and competitive stead. The implementation of the PIP 2018 initiatives will provide us the runway to accelerate our current plans of convergence and digital,” he elaborated. TM announced the introduction of its new Broadband and mobile plans to boost its market leadership position and deliver on the national broadband aspiration with respect to price, speed and coverage. The new plans are as detailed below: 1. A new affordable entry level unifi package at 30Mbps for targeted B40 segment. Lower income groups can access high-speed broadband through this package at a price point below RM100 (more than 40% lower price from the existing 30Mbps package). Registration for pre-booking starts 15 July 2018 via unifi.com.my.  2. unifi ‘turbo’ plans offering more than double the current broadband speed. TM will gradually upgrade the speed for all its existing unifi customers at more than double the speed at no extra cost starting 15 August 2018, while new customers subscribing to existing unifi plans before 31 December 2018 will also be upgraded accordingly in 2019.  3. Special package upgrade for pre-unifi (formerly known as Streamyx) customers in unifi areas nationwide. Eligibility status check will be available via unifi.com.my from 15 July 2018. Note: All above are subject to technical availability in customers’ areas and terms & conditions.  4. A re-launch of its ‘unlimited’ unifi Mobile postpaid plan, which gives customers unlimited data, calls and messaging. This serves as a convergence offering exclusive to existing broadband customers and will be available at all unifi outlets and unifi.com.my from 15 July 2018.  “As Malaysia’s Convergence Champion, we believe that internet access is a critical enabler to grow our digital and creative economy towards making life and business easier for all. Today, we serve nearly 2 million broadband homes, more than 8 million individuals and connect more than 10 million devices nationwide. We hear what Malaysians want – faster internet connection at affordable prices, which has been our aspiration since the launch of unifi in 2010. In October 2016, we announced our Broadband Improvement Plan (BIP), with speed increase upgrades of up to 100Mbps at the same price and completed the exercise in 2017 to benefit close to 1 million broadband customers nationwide, including 323,000 pre-unifi customers. Currently, we have started contacting our pre-unifi customers in unifi areas for an upgrade to unifi plans. For others not in unifi areas, we will continuously invest in our network to provide at least our 30Mbps entry level unifi package through the latest fixed and wireless broadband technologies. Collectively, these new Broadband plans will catapult Malaysia beyond a majority of our regional peers into a competitive set of countries globally with high-speed broadband,” he added.
