TM R&D wins prestigious MSC Malaysia APICTA 2018 for the innovation of Smart Safety Helmet
Places TM R&D as the Champion of Research & Development in 2018
TM Research & Development (TM R&D), the research arm and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) recently won the Cross Category: Research & Development for its innovative Smart Safety Helmet during the 19th MSC Malaysia Asia Pacific ICT Awards (MSC Malaysia APICTA) 2018 organised by the National ICT Association of Malaysia (PIKOM). Winning this prestigious award places TM R&D as the champion of Research & Development in 2018. In addition, TM R&D has been selected to represent Malaysia in the Cross Category: Research & Development at the International APICTA Awards 2018 in Guangzhou, China.
Present to accept the award was Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer of TM R&D.
Developed by TM R&D, Smart Safety Helmet is a data driven smart industrial or safety helmet, an Internet of Things (IoT) solution that provides live, wireless monitoring and array of sensors including accident impact and geolocation which can be used to perform various analysis towards creating a safer worksite. It sends telemetry to the cloud and processes the data for the benefit of the employer as well as the staff. It has all the safety helmet features, location tracking services, attendance, violation detection and a video camera for remote coaching and emergency observation of the workforce. This Smart Safety Helmet innovation is the first Smart Safety Helmet in Malaysia and it is now ready to be deployed for industry players across various sectors such as Oil & Gas, Construction, Chemical & Manufacturing Industry and many more.
Commenting on the milestone achievement, Datuk Bazlan Osman, Acting Group Chief Executive Officer of TM said, “We are excited and thrilled to know that TM R&D has won the award. It was such a great honour and it is the first of many other innovations that will be introduced by our R&D arm. We are certainly proud of this recognition and TM R&D’s outstanding achievement in the ICT industry.”

The invention of this smart helmet without doubt will increase operational efficiency at the work place and enhance productivity level of the workforce.”
The Smart Safety Helmet started off as a challenge in speed and innovation, where the team worked towards creating a first working prototype within two (2) weeks. It later became part of one of the five (5) pillars of smart solutions under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between TM and Petronas to increase operational excellence and enhance customer experience. Gaining huge interests from large corporations, the Smart Safety Helmet was invited to be featured at the recent 4th Malaysia Oil & Gas Services Exhibition and Conference (MOGSEC) as part of TM’s product showcase.

TM supports 5G deployment in Langkawi with its Integrated Operations Command Centre
Deployed the Region’s First Stand Alone (SA) Dedicated 5G network Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) is fully supportive of the 5G Demonstration Project (5GDP) currently undertaken by Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). The Company has already embarked on a total of 11 use cases in Langkawi and deployed the operations of an Integrated Operations Command Centre (IOCC) which is at the heart of 5G implementation in Langkawi. The IOCC, or also known as 5G Command Centre (5GCC), which is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, is an integrated command centre where the data feed and dashboard monitoring of TM 5G network and use cases in Langkawi are centralised. This 5GDP is recording a number of firsts for TM and the country: The first Telco to deploy SA dedicated 5G network in the country and in the region. The first telco in the region to update our Radio Access Network (RAN) and devices with SA dedicated 5G network. The first Telco in the country to achieve 1.5Gbps for 5G speed tests conducted within its 5G use cases sites. Langkawi is the first Smart Tourism Island in the world equipped with 5G Dato’ Noor Kamarul Anuar Nuruddin, Group Chief Executive Officer, TM said: “We fully support MCMC’s 5GDP and we are currently testing the implementation of a converged 5G core network which allows co-existence of Non-Stand Alone (NSA) (5G enabled on current 4G network) and Stand Alone (SA) dedicated 5G network in Langkawi. SA is the future of the 5G network deployment and this demonstration is crucial to fast track 5G implementation in the country. With the implementation of the SA network in Langkawi for the 5GDP, TM is the first Telco that has deployed the first SA dedicated 5G network in the country and in the region. We are also proud to note that 5G speed tests conducted within TM’s 5G use cases sites have achieved up to 1.5Gbps. I’m also pleased to update that TM is the first telco in the region to update our Radio Access Network (RAN) and devices with SA dedicated 5G network.” “For 5GDP in Langkawi, we have deployed the highest number of 5G use cases among the participating telcos and all the 5G network and use cases sites can be monitored via the dashboard at the 5GCC, where our expert, qualified technical team works 24/7 to monitor the operations. It is also linked to the local authorities and emergency response services which allow for the communities as well as tourists to experience a smarter, safer living. In addition, we open the 5GCC for all other Service Providers to deploy their monitoring dashboards so all relevant data can be centralised for collective insights.” Currently, the 5GCC houses the dashboard for the following use cases: Smart Traffic Light Smart Parking Smart Safety and Security Solutions Langkawi Smart Tourism Dashboard (Smart Tourism App and UNESCO 8K VR) Gerbang Langkawi Platform (for Smart Water Management System, Smart Vehicle System, Smart Retail Analytics, Smart Safety Helmet and Geolocation People Safety Solutions) Backed up by analytics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and data-driven insights, the 5GCC is furnished with advanced integrated security features to serve as a security monitoring centre through closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras being installed at hotspots on the island. It is also equipped with face and vehicle recognition system that will assist authorities in public safety and surveillance as well as with criminal investigation, crime prevention and citizen protection. It also monitors weather sensors, tsunami alarms, wind speed systems that have been installed at TM’s designated 5G use cases sites in Kuah and Cenang. The control centre empowers local agencies in promoting tourism safety and attractions effectively, unravelling businesses growth opportunities for the local and providing a safer and smarter crowd control for tourists that will help drive forward Langkawi as a Smart Tourism Island. The monitoring dashboards provides real-time data and consolidated information from all the use cases, for example traffic, parking and security conditions of the 5G use cases areas in Kuah and Pantai Cenang, water consumption level, retail footfall and customer emotions data, number of incidents and alerts, among others. In addition, the authorities can receive alerts and notifications, such as distress calls and response via a panic button from the closed circuit television (CCTV) poles deployed with the smart safety and security solution, or alerts during emergencies e.g. accidents at the workplace, missing individuals, detection of unhappy customers at retail outlets and detection of dangerous driving. These alerts enable the authorities to mobilise resources swiftly during any undesirable incidents or emergency situations, thereby improving their ability to react and respond to the Rakyat's needs in a timely manner for any emergencies. “As the national telecommunications infrastructure provider of Malaysia’s Digital Nation aspirations, we are honoured to be given the opportunity to establish this 5GCC which demonstrates our expertise and capabilities in delivering 5G services to Malaysians nationwide. Chairman of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission pays a visit to TM’s 5G use cases in Langkawi
The Company also deployed the region’s first 5G Standalone (SA) network Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) was honored to receive an official working visit by Al-Ishsal Ishak, Chairman of Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to TM's 5G use cases in Langkawi, Kedah recently. The transmission of 5G service in Pulau Langkawi is utilising the region's first 5G Standalone (SA) network, deployed by TM. Al-Ishsal and his delegates were received by Rosli Man, Chairman of TM; Ir. Ts. Azizi A. Hadi, Chief Network Officer, TM; Ahmad Taufek Omar, Executive Vice President / Chief Executive Officer, TM ONE; and Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM Research and Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D). Commenting on the visit, Rosli said: "We are very honored to welcome the Chairman of MCMC to experience our 5G use cases which include UNESCO 8K Virtual Reality (VR) at Langkawi International Airport (LIA) as well as to observe TM's 5G network, smart and innovative solution operations centre at its 5G Command Centre (5GCC). 5GCC serves as an integrated command centre for all our 5G network, smart and innovative solutions in Langkawi. During the visit, Al-Ishsal was briefed on TM's capabilities and readiness to deploy 5G network solutions as well as how the Company can power the Government's Digital Malaysia aspirations through its innovative products and solutions. TM also aspires to work together with the local authorities, particularly in Langkawi to make it a safe tourist destination via TM's solutions. Under the 5G Demonstration Project, TM through its enterprise and public sector business solutions arm, TM ONE and its research and development arm, TM R&D are deploying 11 use cases in Langkawi as below: Smart Safety and Security Solutions – a real-time monitoring system consisting of cameras and related monitoring equipment placed in strategic areas to serve variety of purposes, including building/grounds security, crime prevention, and traffic observation and integrated with TM's emergency response team. Smart Agriculture Solutions – a solution that offers single display and real time monitoring that provides information on indoor farming environment's key parameters such as temperature, humidity, grow lights intensity and selected plant parameters that are critical for timely decision making and ensuring optimality of the growth conditions. Smart Traffic Lights Solutions – data driven solution that provides a single dashboard for monitoring and helps to improve traffic flow by reducing waiting time at traffic lights, improve traffic congestions and management of traffic. Smart Parking Solutions – parking system that provides real time parking bay monitoring using camera and Artificial Intelligence (AI) which enable users to search for vacant parking bay via mobile app. UNESCO 8K VR – 8K resolution streaming over cloud, showcasing 2 episodes focusing on (1) geopark & geosites; and (2) lifestyle in Langkawi. Tourists can have a taste of all these hidden treasures through an immersive virtual reality experience for some hard to access locations that are not for the less fit. Smart Tourism "My Smart City" application – a single, integrated mobile app for tourists' convenience as it consists of several features and services such as Trip Planner, Places of Interest, Events & Happenings, Parking, and Alert Button. Smart Retail Analytics – a platform that analyses customer's experience within a physical premise and offers insights to enhance that experience. With this solution, retailers can improve customer experience, sales and brand loyalty as the platform supports customised services, targeted advertising and visitor visibility. Smart Water Management System – an internet of water solution that offers seamless end-to-end smart water integration that improves non-revenue water management, optimises repair and replacement of ageing infra as well as improves response to weather events such as flooding and pollution through smart water level and water quality measurements respectively. Smart Vehicle Management System – a fleet management solution that provides management of commercial motor vehicles for work purposes. Smart Safety Helmet – a data-driven smart industrial helmet that helps make worksite safer by providing live, wireless monitoring and array of sensors (i.e. accident impact and geolocation) to perform various analysis of data. Geolocation People Safety – the tracking solution is designed to protect and connect with people who matters the most that allows users to locate loved ones and receive alert based on safety zone and SOS button through mobile application. With all these uses cases in place and most of it are already up and running, TM has the highest number of 5G use cases among the telcos participating in the 5G Demonstration Project. The demonstration project is for TM to test the new 5G features, explore the 5G technology system and assess the best way to deploy 5G infrastructure nationwide. The transmission of 5G service in Pulau Langkawi has been going live since early December, where TM has deployed the first 5G Standalone (SA) network in the country and the region. The Company is currently testing the implementation of a converged 5G core network which allows co-existence of Non-Stand Alone (NSA) and SA network. SA is the future of the 5G network deployment and this demonstration is crucial to fast track 5G implementation in the country. 5G speed tests conducted within TM's 5G use cases sites have successfully achieved up to 1.5Gbps. TM's aspiration is to deliver efficient and cost effective 5G infrastructure via infrastructure sharing approach, through the access regulations implemented by MCMC. This is by leveraging on its extensive fibre networks, including the submarine cables, telecommunications towers, and Cloud computing as well as ready Data Centres to support the 5G era in Malaysia. In terms of devices and use cases, its wholly-owned subsidiary, TM R&D is also developing and experimenting 5G related equipment to get ready for the upcoming 5G.
TM BAGS TOP TECH AWARD FOR ITS DIGITAL WORKFORCE SOLUTION
