Nurturing future digital leaders through YTM Future Skills Champion Schools
Enhances its adopted schools programme to be more holistic by embedding digital technology and leadership skills
TM, through Yayasan TM (YTM), recognises the need to equip the next generation with the digital and technology skills required for Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0). In view of this, in 2014, YTM began its Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) oriented programmes, such as robotics, 3D modelling, coding, and big data analytics, to promote those subjects amongst students and education communities at schools nationwide.
In 2020, the modules were conslidated into TM Future Skills (TMFS) programme, with the aim of making it more comprehensive and beneficial to the intended participants. The programme was tailored to the syllabus outlined by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and covered the nine (9) pillars of the IR4.0. It has been receiving positive feedback from the teachers and students involved and more schools have requested to be part of the programme.
Supporting MOE’s aspiration for digital education transformation, YTM continues to spread the positive impact of TMFS in a more structured approach. Towards this end, the foundation has embarked on TM Future Skills Champion School (TMFS School) initiative, as a continuation of the TM School Adoption Programme with enhanced contents. TMFS Schools foster future digital skills by embracing digital technology in its classroom activities where leadership, design thinking and cognitive abilities were emphasised to prepare the students for future employment.
SMK Gunung Semanggol (SMKGS) in Perak, with more than 90% of its students from B40 families, was selected as the first TMFS School, aligned with YTM’s aspiration to assist B40 students in rural areas. To further facilitate the initiative, YTM is establishing TMFS Digital Hub at TMFS Schools where the schools will be equipped with a PocketLab, robotics set, 3D printer, smart TV, desktop, and digital learning content to gain more interest from its students as well as the neighbouring schools.
"SMK Gunung Semanggol was identified based on its active involvement in various STEM initiatives, including previous TMFS programmes. The school also has passionate and dedicated teachers, where they adopt integrated and innovative approach for more in-depth understanding of the modules among the students. With such exposure and capabilities, we are confident that SMK Gunung Semanggol is able to play the role as a hub to spread the digital technology knowledge to more students and teachers including at the five (5) neighbouring schools, and approximately over 20 secondary schools in the Kerian district," said Izlyn Ramli, Director of YTM, during the launching ceremony of TMFS School in November 2022.
Throughout this three-year programme, YTM, together with its strategic partner, Creative Minds, will work with Multimedia University (MMU), Yayasan Universiti Multimedia (YUM), TM Perak, and other YTM's partners to design and deliver engaging programmes providing the tools and support for students in rural schools to flourish.
"We are also happy to see that SMK Gunung Semanggol promotes the development of other skills, such as urban farming and entrepreneurship, to empower the local communities sustainably. So as we continue to identify more potential schools in more states of Malaysia, we hope this programme will unearth more talented students towards building a competitive and sustainable community in the future," she added.
Salmah Iman, the Principal of SMK Gunung Semanggol, expressed her enthusiasm, "We feel honoured and privileged to be chosen as the first TMFS School in the Northern Zone and Malaysia. We are excited and look forward to share the positive impact of this programme with the nearby schools. As we are committed to ensuring that this programme achieves its goals, we are also confident that YTM's support and assistance will help these students be prepared for future employment and enhance their standard of living."
At the event, Bakri Arsad, Chief Assistant Director of Mathematics and Science, Learning Sector, Perak State Education Department, said, "We welcome such initiatives through collaboration with the private sector, especially for rural schools that need exposure to digital technology. These programmes will inspire students to explore their potential beyond academics and increase the number of students choosing STEM-related fields."
During the launch, guests had the opportunity to visit the Pusat Sumber Sekolah Pendeta Za'aba and experience content and materials created by the students based on specific themes including unique handicrafts and martial arts performances. Guests toured the school's urban farm, where they sampled delicious cuisine prepared by students from the special education class using produce from the farm. SMK Gunung Semanggol provided a wonderful ambience of positive vibes that attract students' engagement and boosted their creativity.
To date, STEM-related programmes by YTM, including TMFS, have benefited over 15,000 students and teachers from over 500 schools across the country. With the support and assistance of various interested partners, we hope this initiative will spark students' interest in pursuing their tertiary studies in technology and digital fields and equip the young generation with future-proof skills relevant to the future workforce.

TM One poised to offer comprehensive data centre capacity and data sovereignty for the government’s digital transformation
As the sole local CSP, TM One will ensure data sovereignty and greater trust, privacy and security in the migration and storage of Government and citizen data With the Malaysian Government’s Cloud Framework Agreement (CFA) formalised, the appointed Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) and Managed Service Providers (MSPs) must now demonstrate their strategic offerings to potential clients. Anticipating the extended capabilities needed to implement the Government’s strategic shift to cloud, TM One, the enterprise and public sector business arm of Telekom Malaysia Group (TM), continues to expand its data centre portfolio. Furthermore, as the sole local CSP, TM One’s established in-country data centres, infrastructure and services ensure that all operations and transactions are independent of foreign regulations or third-party policies and requirements – which imparts greater agility and trust in the migration and supervision of Government and citizen data. Imri Mokhtar, Group Chief Executive Officer of TM said, “As Malaysia’s leader in end-to-end cloud and data centre services, we are committed to strengthening our digital offerings to meet the Government’s MyGovCloud requirements. Investing into the growth of our data centres will enable us to manage the volumes of public data throughout and after the migration process. Our locally-based infrastructure and cloud services also enable us to support the unique needs of the Malaysian Government, especially on data sovereignty.” With several carrier-neutral data centre facilities in Malaysia and one in Hong Kong that operate as multi-cloud providers for various hyperscalers, TM One is on course to launch its tenth centre, which will be a Tier III/Rated 3 Data Centre, anticipated to be unveiled in Q3 2022. With no less than 3MW of power and the ability to accommodate 700 equipment racks, this data centre will aim to improve power efficiency through its cooling system design which runs on modular air-cooled chillers. Across the board, TM One continues to strive towards achieving lower Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) while meeting the SLA of the customers. Similar to TM’s other globally certified hyperscale data centres in the Klang Valley, Iskandar Puteri and Brickfields, this new centre will also conform to security standards and certifications including ISO27001, PCI DSS, DCRA and TVRA which will safeguard the Government’s data and assets. Shazurawati Abd Karim, Executive Vice President of TM One said, “This latest edition to TM One’s data centres will include enhanced data security capabilities through TM One’s Cyber Defence Centre (CYDEC), addressing the Government’s potential risk areas including cybersecurity, compliance, privacy, ethics and social responsibility. To facilitate the transformative journey of individual Government agencies, TM One’s Professional Services team, along with our partner MSP, Cloud Connect, will work closely with these agencies on Cloud Design Planning, Migration Services, and Workload Optimisation Services, customising the solutions and experiences to the unique needs of each agency.” Cloud Connect, a local cloud broker and software engineering company will partner with TM One as its dedicated MSP. Having worked with service providers, enterprises, small-and-medium businesses, as well as Government agencies for a decade, Cloud Connect has a proven track record of implementing multiple enterprise integration projects, bringing together the right people, processes, and technological capabilities. This makes Cloud Connect the perfect fit to deliver TM One’s end-to-end cloud infrastructure and services to Government institutions in their transformation journey. Also addressing the importance of data residency, locality and sovereignty in the MyGovCloud endeavour, Shazurawati explains, “Our hyperscaled and intelligent cloud solutions and data centre facilities are governed by the laws of Malaysia, which guarantees data sovereignty and privacy for the Malaysian Government and its citizens. TM enhances young graduates employability with its TM Protégé Programme
TM PROTÉGÉ Ready to Work (RTW) programme is in line with Government’s effort to raise the employability level of graduates Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) continuously empower Malaysian graduates with its education-oriented and skill enhancement programmes. Most recently, the Company enrolled participants for its Ready to Work (RTW) programme, namely Professional Training and Education for Growing Entrepreneurs or PROTÉGÉ, in line with the Government's effort in raising the employability level of the graduates. This PROTÉGÉ programme or previously known as Program Skim Latihan 1Malaysia (SL1M) is under the supervision of PROTÉGÉ Secretariat and the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (MEDAC). The main objective of this programme is to improve the marketability and entrepreneurial skills of unemployed graduates, including through on-job-trainings and guidance programmes in collaboration with industry experts. It is also aimed at producing more entrepreneurs and job creators who are competitive, meet the current industry need and ready for the global market. TM recently held an engagement session - 'Majlis Ramah Mesra TM bersama PROTÉGÉ' - with the participants of its latest TM PROTÉGÉ Programme intake at Dewan Tun Canselor, Multimedia University (MMU), Cyberjaya. Farid Basir, Chief Human Capital Officer, TM attended the event and shared some tips and thoughts on career growth and development with the participants. Also present at the event were Norhadznita Hj Mohammad Ilham, Head Secretariat PROTÉGÉ, MEDAC, Prof. Dato' Dr Mazliham Mohd Su'ud, President of MMU, Norkhairul Wahab, Chief Executive Officer, MMU Cnergy and Badrul Hisham Bahari, Chief Executive Officer, GITN Sdn Bhd. Commenting on the PROTÉGÉ programme, Farid said, "The creation of a digitally-ready community and future-proof workforce has always been one of the pillars under the Company's Digital Malaysia aspiration. Since 2011, under the SL1M programme, TM has trained 2,846 graduates. The initiative was then continued with PROTÉGÉ, which saw 140 participants selected for the first intake in February 2020. They are currently undergoing on-the-job training at TM and GITN Sdn. Bhd, a subsidiary of TM. In September 2020, the programme continues with its second intake of 169 participants who are now attending soft skills training at MMU, Cyberjaya. The eight (8) months intensive programme consists of soft skills classroom and online training for one (1) month, followed by on-job-training (OJT) for seven (7) months. There are seven (7) core soft skills modules involved including communications, technical and management skills required by the industry as well as effective work ethics. The OJT will prepare the participants with a career mindset and enable them to experience the real working environment. This second intake is expected to graduate in April 2021. TM PROTÉGÉ is among the major initiatives under TM's Graduates Employability Programme. Other initiatives are unifi Sales Apprentice Programme, participation in virtual career fairs, such as Talentbank Digital Career Fair, Graduan Virtual Digital Career Fair and career webinars with universities. In the near future, TM will also introduce a new graduates' trainee programme for the undergraduates. In the meantime, TM, through its education arm, MMU will continue to support the Government's aspiration towards a digital era ready workforce particularly in the fields of IT, communications and multimedia especially in the current Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0) era. Since its establishment 22 years ago, MMU has produced over 60,000 graduates with high marketability, including for major players in the industry. Additionally, since its establishment in 1994, TM's foundation, Yayasan Telekom Malaysia (YTM) has awarded education sponsorship to more than 15,000 deserving students of high academic calibre to pursue their studies at government schools and universities in Malaysia and abroad, with a total sponsorship value of over RM549.5 million. TM PLEDGES RM4 MILLION FOR FLOOD RELIEF AND RECOVERY EFFORTS
KUALA LUMPUR, 16 December 2024 – TM announced at least RM4 million allocation, including cash assistance, to support immediate flood relief efforts for affected customers, communities, and employees nationwide. This is in support of the Sumbangan Ihsan MADANI initiative, aimed at ensuring timely support for those in need. TM installed complimentary Wi-Fi services at various flood relief centres (PPS) to ensure uninterrupted communication for flood victims and PPS’ administration. At the same time, TM’s network restoration team is working tirelessly to restore services for customers impacted by the recent monsoon flood especially in the East Coast region. This involves efforts to immediately divert key network elements for infrastructure that have been destroyed by the flood to minimise service downtime for the Government, enterprises and consumers. TM understands the challenges faced by the flood victims. Therefore, to ease their hardship, TM is committed to provide additional supports for the affected Unifi Home customers which include: • Free replacement of damaged Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) and network components, • A one (1) month subscription rebate for affected customers, and • An extension of credit terms to 60 days without service suspension. Through its social impact foundation, Yayasan TM (YTM) mobilised medical aid, food and other necessities with the support of its social impact partners. As Co-Secretariat and a member of the GLC/GLIC Disaster Response Network (GDRN) coalition, YTM assisted over 18,400 individuals via various initiatives including the MOF-GDRN Bantu Fund, to assist affected communities. Amar Huzaimi Md Deris, Group Chief Executive Officer of TM, emphasised the company’s dedication during this time of need. “We stand in solidarity with our customers, communities, and employees during these challenging times. Beyond restoring connectivity, our focus is on providing meaningful assistance to those affected, ensuring they can rebuild their lives with greater resilience. “We deeply appreciate the patience and understanding of our customers as we work to restore our networks, despite challenges due to power outages and damaged equipment in certain locations. Rest assured, our dedicated teams are fully committed to resolve these as swiftly as possible. To bolster our efforts, we have deployed the 56 Rejimen Semboyan Pakar Telekom Askar Wataniah, a team of TM volunteers, to provide on-ground assistance, deliver emergency services, and expedite restoration works. “TM is grateful to serve alongside the Ministry of Communications, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) and GDRN members in supporting collective efforts to assist communities in need. We extend our heartfelt thanks to these agencies and social impact partners for their dedication and collaboration in ensuring timely and effective support. “Through these partnerships, we supported more than 28,000 individuals via various disaster relief and preparedness programmes, ensuring faster distribution of aid across the country. We remain steadfast in our efforts to restore connectivity and essential telecommunications services and aiding recovery for those affected by the floods," concluded Amar. Earlier last week, Amar visited flood-affected areas in Kelantan and Terengganu, including the Central Disaster Operations Control Centre (PKOB) in Kota Bharu. During his visit, he handed over additional care packages to be stored at the control centre. These care packages will be mobilised to affected areas and distributed to the flood victims as needed. In support of its employees, TM launched an internal crowdfunding initiative to help provide affected Warga TM with essential home amenities, ensuring they could resume their daily lives as quickly as possible. This initiative aligns with TM's "Ini Cara Kita" culture statement, embodying the spirit of caring and togetherness. Additionally, TM extended financial aid to 131 Warga TM whose homes were damaged by the floods. Early flood aid and damage claims have already been disbursed, with further assistance underway. The company urges everyone to prioritise safety during this challenging season and remains committed to restoring essential services and aiding long-term recovery.
